Oceans Collection

Oceans

This collection is inspired by a lifetime spent in water and still it feels as though I've been away too long.

Beyond Words
Beyond Words

In the wonderful book, 'Silence in the Age of Noise', Norwegian Explorer, Erling kagge speaks about "the way that words create boundaries for our experiences." How we can sometimes spend so much time trying to find the words to describe an amazing experience that we don't concentrate on the experience itself. That's why I love diving. It's essentially non-verbal. A profound, highly visual, sensory experience that is truly beyond words. Shared only with those that were there, in a smile or a look - few words, yet profound memories.

Each piece in the Beyond Words collection comes from a lifetime of these experiences/memories. A celebration of all the beauty we see, the emotions we feel, the sounds we hear, all our loves and memories that take us beyond the bounds of language.
Created using repurposed and remelted waste glass from my studio in West Wales.

I'm a bit mad about seagrass. It's a quietly beautiful, often overlooked ecosystem in our ocean environment, kind of like an underwater version of a wildflower meadow. These 'meadows' play host to a myriad of wonderful creatures, as well as sequestering carbon, reducing pollution and being remarkable as the only flowering plant to live in seawater.  This work is a celebration of these marvellous plants.

Each work is hand made in a 2 stage process which starts with making canes to create the sense, colour and texture of the seagrass from an underwater perspective. These canes are cleaned, placed and picked up on a blowing iron, melted and overlaid with further canes to create depth. Each piece is then free blown to its final, organic form. The bottoms are ground and polished to finish. The process itself ensures that each piece made is unique. This collection has been made with repurposed and re-melted waste glass, part of the sustainability initiatives within my practice.

A New Perspective

These works were inspired by watching waves break from below the surface. Tubes of bubbles known as 'rib vortices'  make a beautiful, dynamic frame for the wave.

The Last Wave is influenced by the remarkable photography of @benthouard as seen in Oceanographic magazine. The colour palette is based on his work in French Polynesia and the magic of Teahupo'o enhanced by the blue undertones in the re-melted waste glass. The textures and colours are highlighted by the beautiful underlit plinth.
